Christmas Is Coming

I really have to get with a program!  I haven't even really started thinking about Christmas in terms of baking or shopping for the few gifts that I will give.  The older I get the more likely I am to be 'asleep' when special days come around.  :D  I do want to make some old-fashioned fudge, the kind you actually cook on the stove with cocoa, sugar and milk.  And I always want soft sugar cookies and Tasty Kake.  My friend, Joanie who is from PA, introduced me to Tasty Kake years ago, and it's my 'have to have' treat for Christmas.  Yellow cake with a thick layer of peanut butter on that, and then melted Hershey bars poured on top of the peanut butter.  What's not to drool over???  I admit not having a Christmas tree or any other decorations out does make it exceptionally hard for me to remember that Christmas is only a little over a week away!!

It's funny how the food makes the holiday. I had to make a run to the grocery store yesterday to get cherry chocolates. The cheap waxy chocolate ones. They taste like Christmas.

What Robin said. Certain foods, certain treats, just bring back memories. My grandmother would have a bowl of hard candies on top to her upright piano and we looked forward to those. My mother always talked about getting an orange for Christmas, during Depression days. Glad you'll be making some goodies.

Sadly, so many of my favorite Christmas food memories are attached to things I can no longer make or eat. But we have found a few new favorites, though the pull to them is not as strong. :)
My Mom had always been one who put up a fresh cut tree the day after Thanksgiving. Eventually she and Dad bought an artificial tree, but it still went up on the same day. In their later years they bought a smaller tree that sat on a table in front of the window. From outside it appeared to be a full sized tree. Only from inside could you see that the bottom half was all table. And they stored that tree fully decorated in an enclosed back porch, so they just had to carry it out and set it on the table and plug it in. After Dad passed Mom used an even smaller little centerpiece tree. It sat on the dining room table, covered with miniature ornaments and a tiny strand of lights. She always loved the glow of tree lights, but adapted over the years to what she felt capable of putting up and taking down. I may end up doing the same. Right now we are still in the "full-sized artificial tree" stage.
